Every August, something strange happens in homes everywhere.

The backpacks come out. Alarm clocks start going off earlier. Everyone suddenly has somewhere to be.

And your Golden is at the window like…

“Excuse me. Where exactly is everyone going?” 😂

After a summer of kids being home, vacations, extra walks, backyard time, and people constantly coming and going, the back-to-school transition isn’t just an adjustment for us.

Our dogs notice it too.

Goldens are such social dogs that suddenly having a quiet house can be a pretty big change—especially if they’ve spent the summer with their people around all day.

The good news is that a little planning can make the transition easier.

Here are 7 things I’m doing—or would have ready—to help keep a Golden entertained when everyone heads back to school.

1. Give Them a Job With a Treat-Dispensing Toy

If there’s one thing most Goldens understand, it’s food. 😂

Instead of handing over a treat and having it disappear in approximately 1.7 seconds, put some of their food or favorite treats inside a treat-dispensing toy.

Now they have to actually work for it.

I especially like this idea for mornings because you can give it to your dog around the time everyone is leaving. It gives them something positive to focus on while the house is suddenly getting quiet.

2. Freeze Something for Later

This might be one of the easiest ways to make an enrichment activity last longer.

A stuffable rubber toy or lick mat can be prepared the night before with dog-safe ingredients and frozen.

Depending on what your dog tolerates and what your veterinarian recommends, you might use a little plain pumpkin, their regular food softened with water, or another dog-safe filling.

The frozen version takes longer to work through than handing it over at room temperature.

Important: Introduce new enrichment items while you’re home first. You want to know how your particular dog uses something before leaving them alone with it.

3. Bring Out the Puzzle Toys

Goldens don’t only need physical exercise.

They need something for those busy Golden brains, too.

Puzzle toys make dogs sniff, move pieces around, and figure out how to get to the reward.

And here’s a trick I really like:

Don’t leave every toy out all the time.

Put some away and rotate them.

A toy that disappeared for a week can suddenly become interesting again without you buying another thing.

4. Make Them Use Their Nose

You don’t necessarily have to buy anything for this one.

Hide a few pieces of kibble or treats around an appropriate area and let your Golden find them.

You can also roll treats into an old towel for a supervised sniffing game or scatter kibble in the yard when conditions are safe.

If you want something specifically designed for this, a snuffle mat is another option.

Sniffing gives your dog something to do instead of simply waiting for everyone to come home.

5. Have a Few Toys That Can Survive a Golden

This one comes from experience.

Some Goldens can turn a brand-new stuffed toy into what looks like a crime scene remarkably quickly.

Stuffing everywhere.

Squeaker removed.

Toy officially deceased.

If your Golden is a serious chewer or toy destroyer, this isn’t the time to leave them alone with something they’re likely to shred and swallow.

Choose toys based on your individual dog’s chewing style, and don’t assume something labeled “indestructible” actually is.

6. Don’t Forget the Before-School Routine

Sometimes the best “product” isn’t a product at all.

If possible, give your Golden some activity before the house empties out.

That might be:

A morning walk
A game of fetch
A little training session
Backyard sniffing time
A few minutes practicing commands for treats

It doesn’t have to be elaborate.

The idea is simply to give them some attention and activity before everyone disappears into the morning rush.

And if your mornings are anything like most back-to-school mornings, even 10 or 15 minutes is better than nothing.

7. Create a Cozy Place for the Quiet Part of the Day

After all that enrichment, your Golden needs something else they’re generally very talented at:

napping.

Give them a comfortable, familiar place to settle.

Maybe that’s their bed, crate, favorite blanket, or the suspiciously expensive dog bed they ignore in favor of your couch. 😂

Keep water available and make the area comfortable and safe.

If your Golden enjoys looking outside calmly, a window spot may be perfect. If watching every squirrel, delivery truck, and leaf sends them into a frenzy, a quieter location might be better.

The goal isn’t to entertain them every second you’re gone.

It’s to help them learn that quiet time is okay too.

Your Golden’s Back-to-School Routine Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

You don’t need seven new Amazon packages sitting on your porch.

Really.

Start with what you already have.

Rotate toys. Use part of breakfast for enrichment. Take a quick morning walk. Freeze a favorite stuffable toy the night before.

Then, if there’s something that genuinely makes life easier for you and more interesting for your Golden, add it.

Because back-to-school season means a new routine for everybody…

including the furry family member who definitely did not receive a copy of the school calendar. 😂🐾

And when everyone finally comes through the door at the end of the day?

Something tells me your Golden will be waiting.

Probably with a toy in their mouth.
